ER-301/User Contributed Presets
Attention: This page is currently a work in progress. Please visit this thread to see the catalyzing discussion. Suggestions and contributions are welcome! |
Installation and Insertion of Presets (.unit): As of v0.4.xx of the firmware you can load presets directly without inserting a unit first! I.e. you can put them wherever you like on your front sd card. E.g. ER-301/v0.4/presets/0_user-creations (By creating specific folders you can create your own categories. The '0_' puts the folder to the top of the list). Insert a specific preset by putting the cursor where you want to insert it, press 'Insert' (S3) and then 'Presets' (S3 again). Search for your folder and choose your preset. Hit Enter. 'Presets' will remember the last folder. |
TIP: For others who want to contribute to and/or update this list, please visit the entry template page for instructions on syntax and usage. |
TIP: While this page attempts to be as comprehensive as possible, there are undoubtedly some units we've either missed or haven't gotten around to adding. Please visit the forum for a list of threads with the custom-unit tag. |

Source Generators
This category lists presets that will block signal flow from the left to them. Usually they are placed at the beginning of a given chain or sub-chain. However, you can prevent them from blocking the signal flow from the left by bypassing them. For more in-depth explanation see the Wiki page about Signal Flow

8 step Trig Sequencer unit
Usage is pretty straight forward: There are two custom controls up front labeled “clock” and “reset”. That should be self-explanatory. Then there are 8 toggle controls that turn a step on/off. That’s it. Have fun!!

808 Noise
Something that comes to mind for metallic percussion is the method the 808 used for cymbal sounds – stacking 6 square waves, and running those through a bandpass filter.

Binaural beats
I made a two band custom unit to produce tuned binaural beats tracks (After struggling to get this together on my laptop). The idea is to be able to add a binaural beats track to meditation music I am producing that actually tracks the chord progression of the music without losing the Hertz difference of the left and right ear.

Brvtal Trvth
this is a synth based on two oscillator, Sine and Joe’s Pulse.
thing is they cross modulate and can cross sync (seems stupid but i put a differently timed microdelay on each sync’s input).
So this starts as a fairly basic synth sound and then you can increasingly mess it with the PWM and PM controls, then you can experiment with the SYNC.

Clappa
it is based on the pedal looper. you feed them a clock and a gate input and they record sequences of gates that you can perform realtime (tapping manually or using an external controller or gate sequencer).
hands: this controls the rate of the velvet noise generating denser or sparser mictrotransients at the beginning.
decay: this controls the decay and release of the “tail” adsr. sustain is set to 0.
freq: cutoff of the lopass filter
q: resonance of the lopass filter

Hatta
it is based on the pedal looper. you feed them a clock and a gate input and they record sequences of gates that you can perform realtime (tapping manually or using an external controller or gate sequencer). time: sets decay and release of the envelope controlling the VCA, hence volume decay. note that the value you dial in is summed to the random value when the RANDTIME parameter is on. freq: sets the frequency of the high pass filter shaping the sound of the cymbal. q: sets the resonance of the high pass filter shaping the sound of the cymbal. noise: sets the relative volume of the white noise component of the cymbal. squares: sets the relative volume of the square waves component of the cymbal. 4 enharmonic partials have been used, emulating the classic 808 cymbal solution. randtime: toggles a random generator that automatically creates random values for the TIME parameter whenever a gate is received.

Hillz
Hillz is a synth voice inspired by function generators such as DUSG or Maths, in particular by Frap Tools Falistri. Each of the two sections uses an internal Sine osc to trigger an ADSR envelope (with zero sustain) and make it loop at audio rate. Controlling the attack, decay and release of the envelope waveshaping is obtained. Rich sound and low cpu.

Hillz 2
Basically the same unit as Hillz with added logic operation on the two sections.
if you want to change the logic function click “open” and navigate to the “logic” mixer channel, enter it and click on the header of the Logics unit to change the operator. added control: logics: bipolar level of the Logics section. i kept it bipolar so you can sum the normal or phase inverted output of the logic section.

Kanonika 0.1
keep in mind there in a Scale Quantizer inside Pitch in , so you can go in and choose your favourite scale. by default it is set to Pentatonic minor (pentatonic scales work really good with analog shift registers, less dissonances).
in this version i populated the unit with 4 varispeed sample players (just put a c tuned sample of whatever you want into each player and you are good to go)
keep in mind you can use whatever sound producing unit you might prefer BUT you will have to relink your parameters in this way:
each v/oct might be linked to the s&h under the relative band’s pitch
(band 1: pitch in/s&h, band 2: pitch 2/s&h, band 3: pitch3/s&h, band 4: pitch4/s&h)
AND
you have to set your gates linked to the master GATE (and put a slight delay after each gate. i use microdelay, and start with a 5ms delay on the 4th unit just to be sure the gate always arrives AFTER the cv has changed, then it will be 6ms on the third band’s gate, 7ms on the 2nd band’s gate and finally 8ms on the first band’s gate. check the structure of my unit to fully grasp the concept).

Kicka
it is based on the pedal looper. you feed them a clock and a gate input and they record sequences of gates that you can perform realtime (tapping manually or using an external controller or gate sequencer). tune: sets the base frequency of the kick drum in semitones. adecay: sets decay and release of the envelope controlling the VCA, hence volume decay. pdecay: sets decay and release of the envelope controlling the frequency of the oscillator, hence controlling the attack portion of the kick drum (how long). penv: sets the amount of the envelope controlling the frequency of the oscillator, hence controlling the attack portion of the kick drum (how strong).

Scannable Harmonic Oscillator
Inspired by a well known Eurorack harmonic oscillator, built around Sine Oscs and the brilliant Bump Scanner unit. Controls should be pretty self explanatory — ‘center’ scans through harmonics, ‘bwidth’ sets the width of each frequency band (bands have to overlap for smooth scanning), ‘xfade’ controls Bump Scanner’s ‘fade’ parameter, ‘fdbk’ controls Sine Oscs ‘feedback’ parameter and individual harmonics level faders control… well, individual harmonics levels.

Straight Shooter
This is a Two Band synth voice preset called “Straight Shooter” because it’s a pretty straight, no modulation sort of arcade game type voice with a higher pitched channel and a sub. You can mute any of the two bands from the main controls (mute 1 and mute 2). Super simple, but I like these sort of "pre-patched fixed architecture voices to load up and throw in a patch. No filter by the way! In the demo there is some reverb and I add a little delay later on.

Wavetable LFO
it scans wavetables with a clocked triangle wave.
I use it exclusively with the wavetable sample chains. Load one of the sample chains into the sample scanner and you are good to go.
Clock is your clock input, Div sets the clock division, Window changes the active zone, while Zoom let’s you zoom into the wave. Att attenuates the signal.
The result is pretty random but maybe someone get’s a use out of it.

Effect Generators
This category lists presets that will NOT block the signal flowing from the left to them. Usually they follow Chain inputs and/or Source Generators. Keep in mind though that some (if not all) of the "following generators" are perfectly capable of generating signals on their own (i.e. even if there is no input from the left!) due to e.g. feedback patching within the unit itself and some units capability of selfoscillation. For more in-depth explanation see the Wiki page about Signal Flow
Gated Burst / Gate to Trigger
Gated Burst: Emits bursts while receiving a gate. The bursts are pulses with intervals of "burst time" and length "burst time/2".
Controls: burst time: 0-1000 ms
Gate to Trigger: Converts incomming gates to triggers of selected length. Controls:
trigger time 1-1000ms

Shards
it’s a glitchy looper/delay that relies heavily on a Manual Loops unit using its amplitude for self-modulation. Incoming audio gets recorded into a feedback looper with a 10 second buffer, which is shared with the Manual Loops unit. A trigger is extracted from the amplitude of the ML unit, which is used to send random voltages to various parameters in the unit (ML params, delay, etc.). Just assign your input(s) to the chain itself, and the unit will take care of the rest.

As a challenge, I set out to make a Clouds “clone” custom unit on the Orthogonal Devices ER-301. It’s not strictly or exactly a clone, but rather a Clouds-inspired custom unit that expands on the Manual Grains unit in the 301. It adds a few Clouds-inspired controls, as well as a few other twists.

Starthief’s custom units
Feedback Keeper: Put this inside a feedback loop along with a reverb or delay, to automatically maintain “safe” infinite sustain.
Complex Osc: this is a simple ER-301 take on the style of complex oscillator I prefer to work with, with options for both linear and exponential FM, AM, automatic tracking between the two oscillators with the offset exposed at the top level, and a feedback control for other timbral variation.
LPG: it’s got some quirks, and is possibly not the most natural of gates  but I kind of like its characteristics.
Crossfade: simply enough, a 2-Band unit (not a Custom Unit preset) with a mix control that opens one VCA while closing another.
Wavefolder: based on a sample scanner with a single-cycle sine, plus the plumbing to control the folding mix level as well as intensity and “symmetry” (sample scanner width). It will expect the file \samples\Adventure Kid\AKWF_bw_perfectwaves\AKWF_sin.wav to be on the card, but you can redirect it to any single-cycle sine you happen to have, or replace the sample for different folding character.
Wavefolder 2: this is an improved version. Instead of a sine, it uses a hand-drawn approximation of the transfer function of the middle stage of a Serge wavefolder 2.

Voices
4 Voice Tuned Sampler
A custom unit conceived for bringing polyphony in a eurorack patch, using a common 1 gate/1 pitch CV keyboard/controller.
Based on 4 Vari-Speed Players, first you have to load your sample in each sampler voice. I personally recommend the Adventure Kid wave sample pack, a bunch of single cycle waveforms samples.
Hook up all the connections via the unit menu, configure the tuning of each voice and modulation according to the result you want to archive and you are ready to play some chords.
